India’s Forex Reserves Fall by $18.3 Billion to $747.5 Billion

India’s foreign exchange reserves declined by $18.3 billion during the week ended September 25, bringing the country’s total reserves to $747.5 billion, according to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).Foreign currency assets (FCA), which form the largest component of India’s foreign exchange reserves, witnessed a significant decline of $15.5 billion during the week. Following the fall, FCA stood at $615.4 billion. The country’s gold reserves also declined during the period. Gold reserves fell by $2.5 billion to $108.7 billion. Gold is an important component of India’s overall reserve position and provides diversification to the country’s foreign exchange assets.Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), the reserve assets created by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), declined by $97 million during the week. The SDR holdings stood at $18.64 billion.India’s reserve position with the IMF also recorded a decline of $86 million, taking it to $4.8 billion. The movement in foreign exchange reserves is closely watched as it reflects the country’s external financial position and provides a cushion against global economic and financial uncertainties. Changes in foreign currency assets, gold holdings and other reserve components can influence the overall level of reserves. The latest figures indicate a notable weekly reduction in India’s reserve stock, although the country continues to maintain a substantial level of foreign exchange reserves.
