Sensex and Nifty opened nearly flat on Wednesday as IT stocks gained over 1%, while rising crude oil prices and US bond yields kept investors cautious.

Sensex, Nifty Open Flat Amid Mixed Cues; IT Stocks Lead Gains

New Delhi, October 14, 2026: Indian equity benchmarks opened nearly flat on Wednesday as investors weighed domestic optimism against persistent global uncertainties. IT stocks led sectoral gains, while consumer durables and healthcare shares remained under pressure. The Nifty 50 opened at 22,715.75, down 6.20 points or 0.03 per cent. The Sensex began trading at 73,049.76, up 15.98 points or 0.02 per cent.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty IT gained more than 1 per cent, emerging as the top performer. Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom and Nifty FMCG advanced by up to 0.38 per cent. Nifty Media and Nifty Private Bank also traded in positive territory. In contrast, Nifty Consumer Durables declined 0.67 per cent, while healthcare-related indices fell by up to 0.6 per cent.

Market experts said Tuesday’s sharp rally in the Nifty was unexpected amid a broader weak market and was largely driven by short-covering. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remarks that the government would carefully review stakeholder feedback on long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and securities transaction tax (STT) also supported sentiment by raising hopes of potential policy changes. However, global headwinds continued to weigh on the outlook. The US 10-year Treasury yield remained around 5.2 per cent, while Brent crude traded near $106 per barrel.

Analysts said financial services, telecom, metals and automobile stocks could remain relatively resilient on expectations of healthy second-quarter earnings, although global risks may limit further gains. Technically, the Nifty’s recent recovery has revived expectations of a move towards 23,200. Immediate support is seen around 22,550, while the 22,787–22,880 range remains a key hurdle for further upward momentum.

Asian markets also rebounded after two sessions of losses, supported by expectations of a potentially less aggressive US Federal Reserve approach to interest rate hikes next year. Meanwhile, crude oil prices rose as traders assessed supply risks linked to clashes involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia, alongside the prospect of increased Russian diesel supplies.
