Visually Impaired Protesters Break Gate to Enter Punjab Civil Secretariat

Chandigarh: Members of Bharat Netarheen Sevak Samaj staged a protest at the Punjab Civil Secretariat on Friday, raising three key demands related to pension, government jobs and educational facilities for visually impaired people. The protesters broke through a closed gate to enter the Secretariat after entry was restricted. A banner displayed by Bharat Netarheen Sevak Samaj, Ludhiana, appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to address the concerns of the visually impaired community and take action on their demands.

The organisation called for an increase in monthly pension, the filling of reserved vacancies in government departments and improvements to a government school for visually impaired students in Jamalpur.

The protesters raised three main demands:

  • Increase in pension: The organisation demanded that the monthly pension for visually impaired people be increased from ₹1,500 to ₹5,000.

  • Filling of job backlog: It sought the filling of pending reserved vacancies for eligible visually impaired candidates in government jobs.

  • Upgradation of Jamalpur school: The organisation demanded that staff shortages at the government school for visually impaired students in Jamalpur be addressed and that the institution be upgraded to the Class 12 level.

Through the protest, the organisation sought to draw the state government's attention to issues concerning financial support, employment opportunities and education for visually impaired people.
